One thing I liked to do, especially when we have new team members join the team, is ask the “Question of the Day” at each weekly team meeting.
I asked questions like “What’s your favorite candy bar?”, “What’s your favorite movie genre?” and “Where would you like to go on vacation, if you had $5,000 given to you?”
Quickly, everyone finds out who they have something in common with, or who has a funny answer. They remember those answers and, often, talk about them when working one on one with that person.
Then, to up the game, a few months later, I’ll do Jeopardy-like game, where we test what they remember about their co-workers.
It doesn’t take a lot of effort to get your team members working together better. Depending on the size of the team, take 5-10 minutes out of an hour meeting to do this mini-team-building exercise. It’s fun to hear what other people’s answers are.
