John Mellencamp Setlist Debate

Since the 1994 Dance Naked Tour, John has been playing shorter (around 90 minutes) shows that have consisted primarily of remixes of his greatest hits.  This has generated lots of debate about what people would like to see.  This page is not a discussion forum, but where I've documented my position.

I have expressed my opinions (play longer and play other songs) over the years in postings to the John Mellencamp Fan Mailling List on January 16, 1997, February 10, 1997, February 27, 1997, April 25, 1999, April 26, 1999, April 27, 1999, and April 27, 1999 (my final post on the topic). After the Good Samaritan Tour stop in Chicago, I added this post on August 21, 2000.

In October, 1998, to have some fun and challenge with this topic, I conducted a Setlist Contest in which fans could submit their proposed setlists.

My 1/16/97 posting to John Mellencamp List:

My thoughts regarding a tour:

1) John would have more fun playing his newer stuff. Besides the travel, etc., John had to get tired of touring because he played the same stuff over and over. While its great stuff, and he made the choice to do that, we'd all get tired of doing the same thing, over and over and over and over (unless that thing was...;)

2) John would have more fun if he played with the types of show he performed. Some years back, Elvis Costello had a tour of small venues where every night was a different kind of show. If I remember correctly, this include a "wheel of songs" show in which a wheel, with song titles, was spun to determine what songs would be played, an audience request night, an acoustic night, etc.

3) My backyard would make a great venue- no Hard Rock, no VH1, no Martha Stewart. Just John Mellencamp, his band, and you know, chips, dips, chains and whips. I'm not talking candle wax on the nipples, or witchcraft, or anything like that. Just a couple of hundred mailing-list fans (or JM music video cast members) running around in their underwear acting like complete Mellenheads.

My 2/10/97 posting to John Mellencamp List:

I saw the VH1 Tickets First special interview where John hinted that he's going to do something of a greatest hits/MHGL style for this tour. This sounds like the BBQ, SF & LA shows. And wasn't his last, abreviated tour really a remixed greatest hits? He thinks that's what his fans want. Someone should let his management know that, as has been discussed frequently on this list, many of his fans want to hear his newer stuff live as much, if not more, than his older stuff.

If he REALLY wants to make the audience happy, he should reconsider what it is that they want. John should give us some credit and realize that we're not still buying his albums and going to his concerts because of Pink Houses and Jack & Diane. If that were the case, we'd have stopped buying his stuff after Lonesome Jubille. I don't believe the audience's are paying the $$ they do these days to scream "Oh yeah life goes on" with thousands of others. I can do that at home a whole lot cheaper.

I think that this tour, in a theater setting, is a perfect opportunity for John to play the kind of show HE would want to play, not what he THINKS we want. He'll have more fun...and I believe we will too.

My 2/27/97 posting to John Mellencamp List:

I was one of those who said stuff earlier that caused some of you to get on this "true fan" kick. Maybe, I can help us end this.

First, I agree with Bryon.

Second, some people are missing the point.

I don't believe this discussion intended to define "true" fans. I think it has been about John being true to himself in designing his shows- What does John want to play? What music and songs excite John now? What's important to John now?

In numerous interviews...

1) John has said that some of his latest work being his best work (even without being a commercial success)

2) John has said that he is tired of his old stuff and questions the quality of some of the older work

3) John has said he plays lots of his older stuff because his fans want it and when they have fun, he has fun.

4) John has said he thinks when fans shell out the $$, he should show them a good time.

With this in mind, I (and I think Bryon and some others) believe that John doesn't "know" what all his fans want anymore. And while he can't please everyone, I think he'd be surprised how much support there is for his latest stuff. I worry that while John is playing the hits, he's holding it against us that he still has to play those songs. I'd rather feed off John's excitement of his performance than have John have to feed off us. Otherwise, maybe John should pay us each $100 for being his entertainment.
Maybe, playing the old hits is just the whole "artist thing" of strugling with personal satisfaction with one's work and the acceptance of that work by others.

Regardless, I think John is great, I've spent the $100/seat, plan to go to multiple shows, and I will have a GREAT TIME! But, there's nothing wrong with wishing and hoping things would be different- it doesn't make me more or less of a fan! And, for those who wish to "hold on to sixteen as long as you can", it doesn't make you more or less of a fan either!

I hope everyone had a blast! Regardless of the setlist, I wish I had been there. But I will, say, not surprisingly to those who have heard me 2 cents, I'm disappointed.

This is not to knock John and the band. They work hard at this and put in the sacrifice to go out on the road and entertain us.

But I will eternally disappointed in his belief that he has to play his hits for us and even the non die-hard fans all the time. I actually believe its harder to justify the $$ when its practically the same thing each time.

Opening night or the RET tour is the Greatest Hits with a little twist or two...which was the Dance Naked Tour...which was the MHGL tour. Its fun to see them on tour, and great to know that some of these hits can be done half-a-dozen different ways, but I still wish it was different.

I still think John and the band are awesome, but I will eternally dream of other setlists.

I know at anytime he won't remember all the lyrics to all his songs. But if that is the problem, I don't see what is so hard about picking 20-25 songs and spending 1-2 months practicing them. What did he say in Storytellers?- he's tenacious, if you put enough time towards anything you should be able to be good at it.

I don't think memory is the problem. He has said repeatedly in interviews that he thinks the paying customer "expects" to hear the hits (whether his or someone else's). I don't claim that he is wrong about that. I just claim that I'm not one who feels that way.

My first 4/27/99 posting to John Mellencamp List:

From the person who "started this" (again?), some comments

< as long as John is HAPPY and ENJOYING himself, more power to him...... >

I'd claim that this is debatable. John has said in interviews that he does this not because he wants to, but because the fans want it. He then feeds off their energy. He says the fans make it great, not him. I think if he could choose his own show, regardless of fan response, it wouldn't be this that makes him happy. Remember, he was very disappointed by the acceptance of Human Wheels.

< I feel as fans of John's we should all be very thankful that there even is another tour......THIS COULD BE THE LAST!!!!! >

Didn't I hear this about the MHGL tour? Haven't the Rolling Stones kept saying that? Sorry, I am NOT putting John in the same category as them. In my opinion, the last tour argument doesn't fly. And if it was ME, I'd make the last tour what I wanted it to be...it would be my last chance. And since I wouldn't have to worry about filling an arena again, it wouldn't bother me to tick off a few people.

As for me, I even put my "money" where my mouth is and distributed a guitar pick, 45s and bootlegs to folks who took the time to come up with their own proposed setlist. Having tried it myself, I don't claim its easy. I know John and the band probably struggle with it themselves especially since they have to "live" with the decision. As I said before, I'm thankful that they make the sacrifice to come out on the road for us, I just continue to hope for something a little different.

My second 4/27/99 posting to John Mellencamp List:

...until there are some changes or another tour.

Since I started this latest round of debate (and have kept with it), I'll provide my closing, summary points/comments:

1) I agree that people have a good time at John's shows...its obvious. He wouldn't keep selling out the shows if they weren't having a great time. However, I believe he would STILL SELL OUT shows and everyone would STILL HAVE A GREAT TIME if he used a different "formula" than his greatest hits approach. Look at past tours- an acoustic "Chain Gang", "Hotdogs and Hambugers", "Empty Hands", "Rumbleseat", "The Real Life", etc. They were still GREAT shows even though all the songs weren't mega-hits.

2) Based on all the things I've heard/read him say, I believe John would PREFER to do a different kind of show. I wish he'd do the show HE WANTS to do, not what he thinks we want. I think it would be INCREDIBLE, for everyone, to see what that show looks like (probably covers, pace changes, some deep acoustic stuff, digging stuff from the archives all along with some real ROCKIN'). Unfortunately, I think he fears that it wouldn't be accepted and he wouldn't want to deal with that dissapointment. This might explain why he thinks "Human Wheels" was his best album but there aren't any "Human Wheels" songs on this tour- it didn't make its mark at the cash register.

OK...that's it for me on this topic.

My 8/21/00 posting to John Mellencamp List after his Chicago Good Samaritan Tour apprearance:

Believe it or not, this was better than being on stage with John. For those of you familiar with my position on his shows/setlist (see http://www.ticsay.com/mrticsay/JohnMellencamp/JM-SetlistDebate.htm), you'll know why I'm a happy guy. I got to see a show that I think John REALLY enjoyed doing. He looked like he was having a GREAT time today.

The Setlist Contest

The original contest notice:

I'm on a mission to get John to play some different stuff live. It's a personal mission and everyone doesn't have to agree with it. But I'm going to put some "skin" into this one. Here it is:

I will be giving a way a choice of JM prizes to the top proposed setlist submissions. The prizes have yet to be determined, but will come from extras in my JM collection and probably will include some CDR boots, tour programs, promo flats/posters, maxi CD's, 45s, etc. I'll announce the pool of items later when I've had a chance to go through it all.

The rules are:

1) You can only use 2 of the following songs (Small Town, ROCK in the USA, Pink Houses, Authority Song, Hurt So Good, Jack and Diane, Crumbin Down, Lonely Ol' Night and Check It Out). Hint: Bonus points awarded for using less than 2 and anyone who does not use ANY of these songs WILL make the finalist list.

2) You must include 2 covers. They can be done either by themselves or included in a JM mix. Please list the original artist or an artist with a well-known version of the song.

3) You must pick 1 acoustic song and it cannot be Jackie Brown or Human Wheels.

4) Bonus points added for a guest appearance, but only one guest singing one song is allowed.

5) The show must contain at least 25 songs.

In addition to handing out awards, I intend to try to forward this to John's team for review. That is my real goal- to get John to see that we're interested in his other music live too! I don't claim they'll do anything more than throw it away, but at least I've tried. Maybe, just maybe, when he tours and "Real Life" or something else is played, you can think "Hey, maybe I helped convince him to play that!"

The contest results:
(For some reason, the email addresses our out-of-wack but I'm not going to try and straighten them out.)

Coincidence, or a sign?- While compiling all the entries, YLIN starts to play on the radio!

Here are the entries I received in the setlist contest. Not as many as I expected, but I'm kind-of glad I didn't have more. It's a challenge to review and decide between even these. I don't think I had a single bad entry. Of course, I'm a biased Mellenhead. So unless you violated the rules and put in Pink House or tried to pass French Shoes off as a viable live tune, it couldn't have been too bad a set.

Some personal observations:
  • Most of the folks who entered commented on both how much fun it was and also how hard it was. Picking songs, making them work, etc. isn't easy. Imagine what John has to go through (he has to put his name behind it all).
  • There's lots of interest in early Mellencamp (Sugar Marie, Taxi Dancer)
  • Lonesome Jubilee is a hit including lots of picks for Hotdogs and Hamburgers (one of my favorites)
  • Melissa Etheridge is popular. Four of you picked her for the guest appearance. Of course, guest appearances would vary throughout the tour.
  • Some people just couldn't help the urge to put a restricted song in the set. It says a lot about how great the songs are (I don't disagree with that), but it will probably cost them in the contest (I need any tiebreakers I can find)
  • THIS IS HARD. Try to narrow down the number of songs. Try to have enough well known stuff. Try to slip in some less known stuff. Try to decide if its old, new, or both. Try to make it flow.

I'll announce the winners either late today or Wednesday since I got some last minute entries to consider.

    Thanks to everyone who participated!

    - Michael
